About the listing
The Apollo Bay Writers Festival (ABWF) has grown from Warm Winter Words, a winter literary event that has been hosted in Apollo Bay for 24 years. Warm Winter Words extended into a two day programme in 2016 and will run again as the full Apollo Bay Writers Festival in 2017.
It is the only literary festival hosted within the Colac Otway Shire. This year's festival, "Use Your Words", has a Social Justice theme and will feature cartoonist Michael Leunig, feminist writer Clementine Ford, Islamic feminist Dr Susan Carland, the refugee arts collective Ondru, and representatives from the homeless / rooming house publication Roomers among others.
Spanning over 2 nights and 2 days, the ABWF will include Warm Winter Words, a keynote address from Clementine Ford, an In Conversation session with Leunig, a Q&A panel, locals debate, readings and text discussions in businesses and private homes, and a workshop programme. For the first time in 2017 the festival will be sponsoring a writing competition with the intention of producing a publication featuring local authors. The festival will hosted its large events out of the Apollo Bay Mechanics Institute with businesses and community venues providing smaller venues for more intimate performance
In 2017 the ABWF aims to consolidate the reputation built by Warm Winter Words for providing high quality and diverse speakers and build a strong audience in support of a sustainable festival for coming years. Our 2017 programme coincides with the new WinterWild festival which is anticipated to help attract a larger and more diverse audience and contribute to a strong calendar of winter cultural events for Apollo Bay. The Writers Festival will be delivering programming across the third weekend of WinterWild. WinterWild is supporting the Writers Festival by providing delivery of WinterWilds flagship event - outdoor events on the Saturday night associated with the lighting of the brazier / bonfire.
